Backpackers, students to take centre stage in overseas talent sourcing

International students and backpackers are set to play a key role filling skills gaps in the coming months, an overseas talent specialist says.

"We have got a skills crisis and now a labour crisis which is covering both unskilled and semi-skilled workers," WorkinAus CEO Brian Schroder told a recent Captain's Table event.

"In the long term the Government will look to train Australians to meet the skilled shortage but in the short term obviously they want to get a lot of people here very quickly."

In the aged care sector alone there are 150,000 vacancies and Schroder says in the hospitality sector the situation has got so extreme that one client, operating 193 venues, says it would be happy to employ people for two weeks at a time across different venues.

"In my 20 years in recruitment I have never seen anyone say they are happy to employ people for two weeks..."
