'Enticing' overseas talent the next hiring challenge

Australia's border might be open but it won't be a quick fix to the talent shortage, with recruiters now likely to face attraction obstacles and major processing delays, specialists say.

"Australia is a great place, but the borders have been shut a long while and people have thought of other things to do," says Pendragon MD John Glover.

Employers will have to "entice" talent to come from overseas, because "they're still a bit worried about things changing again and being caught up in further COVID issues a long way from home".

"You can offer them the proposition to come here but it doesn't mean people are just going to jump at it. Just because we've opened the borders, doesn't mean that people are just queuing up to come here."
