Recruiters often start the new year with great resolutions that are derailed within days, but by helping them to be more realistic and strategic, leaders can prevent discouragement and foster success.

When people call Younique Coaching director Sophie Robertson in February and say they're already struggling to keep their New Year's resolutions, the problem is always the same, she tells Shortlist. They've resolved to change, but they haven't taken action.

There are three steps to change, she says. The first is awareness (eg, "I eat too much junk food"); the second is deciding to address the issue. But it's the third step that tends to trip people up...
