Hybrid work and culture reset luring talent amid intense competition

A 100% hybrid model is helping to expand talent pools and attract more candidates in the intensely competitive legal industry, a people leader says.

The global market for legal talent remains highly competitive, particularly as demand from firms increases amid strong sector performance, says Lander & Rogers chief people officer Catherine Whitehead.

"The domestic shortage of suitably skilled lawyers is an ongoing issue for legal practices, with firms forced to act quickly to secure top talent or face lengthy delays that can impact practice scalability and the ability to service growing client demand."

Employees and candidates have 'recalibrated' their priorities, she tells Shortlist, including reassessing personal priorities and values alignment with law firm culture.

"In particular, we are seeing increased appetite for greater work-life integration through permanent flex working. We are also observing appetite for further learning and development through microcredentials..."
