Hybrid work and "gangster move" attract talent to 'best place to work'

Far from hindering its ability to attract talent amid remote work shifts, investing more in physical workspaces and promoting a collaborative culture has been a point of difference in the market, a tech employer's people leader says.

Technology company Hipages, which ranked second in this year's 'best places to work' list, has moved to a 50% hybrid model, and was initially concerned this would deter prospective hires, chief people and culture officer Jodette Cleary tells Shortlist.

However, it "found it actually to be a benefit with talent attraction", helping her team to hire more than 120 people in the past financial year, in what was "probably the toughest talent acquisition market in my career", Cleary says.

Finding out that Hipages employees are regularly in the office was a "deciding factor" for many candidates, she says, while the ones who were turned off "aren't the type of people that will work well in our environment"...
