Jobs Summit an opportunity to address "systemic problems"

Recruiters have welcomed details of the Federal Government's upcoming Jobs and Skills Summit, declaring it an opportunity to address economic and business needs so long as it avoids "ideological naval gazing".

There are no signs that the skills and labour shortage will ease in the immediate future, and despite challenging economic headwinds, "current employment market data remains robust, indicating that Australia has the potential to remain resilient, and even grow, in the face of some serious economic threats", says RCSA CEO Charles Cameron.

This, however, depends on ensuring that workplace relations policy setting appropriately responds to issues such as the value today's workers place on highly individualised – and flexible – working arrangements, Cameron tells Shortlist.

And crucially, Australia also needs a migration approach that supports demand for skills and labour, he says...
