'Negligent' labour hire company to pay share of $1.6m damages order

A labour hire company has been criticised for sending an "unqualified" recruiter to conduct site visits, and must pay 20% of an injured worker's $1.6 million damages claim.

NSW Supreme Court Acting Justice Michael Elkaim found Speedie Staff Solutions had recognised its staff were involved in "heavy work", and had exhibited a "degree of control" over its employees by visiting host sites and providing advice on health and safety.

The injured employee had been with Speedie since 2010 and was sent to work for JNC Group Australia in January 2011, where he completed general labouring duties including for the National Broadband Network rollout...
