Despite recent high-profile cyber incidents and the threat of vastly higher penalties, many recruiters still aren't taking their privacy obligations seriously, says compliance specialist Dianne Gibert.
Recruitment businesses have historically seen having a large candidate database as an asset, contributing to the value of the business, says Gibert, the managing director of Certex International.
"The thing is, the data that they receive from their candidates is in fact a liability.
"It's given to them under certain conditions, for them to use only in an agreed way, and only to hold for a certain period of time," she tells Shortlist. "They hold it in trust and... they must take steps to look after it...
