Recruitment company fined over on-hired worker's death

A labour hire company that supplied a 29-year-old worker for only five weeks before he was killed at a host site has been fined and convicted for failing to ensure workplace safety.

Taurus Recruitment was fined $24,000 for failing to adequately consult and coordinate safety with the host employer, Kara Resources (trading as Hallett Resources Truro), which operated the Truro Quarry.

The father of three young children under 11 suffered fatal injuries in April 2020 while trying to dislodge a metal cap, which had become stuck in a rock crushing machine. He had been placed at the Truro Quarry in late March.

In handing down his penalty decision, South Australian Employment Tribunal Deputy President Judge Tony Rossi said, "[the worker], his wife and their three young children were entitled to expect that after each shift of work he would return safely home"...
