Skilled immigration changes "a win", but just the "first step"

Employers and recruiters have welcomed today's announcement that the skilled migration cap will lift to 195,000, but say this is just the "first step" to luring the brightest overseas talent to Australia.

This morning, Minister for Home Affairs Clare O'Neil told the Jobs and Skills Summit the Federal Government would increase the permanent skilled migration rate from 160,000 places to 195,000 for 2022/23.

And this includes "a big lift under the state and territory sponsored visas – from 11,000 last year to 31,000".

"We make it easy for temporary migrants to come here, but very hard for highly skilled, permanent migrants. We've got it backwards," O'Neil says...
