Skills-based talent strategies in the crosshairs; time to 'recalibrate hiring'

Skills-based talent strategies are among the top priorities for people leaders and employers this year, with gig workers expected to "substantially replace" full-time employees, research shows.

According to Mercer's 2022 Global Talent Trends report, reskilling/upskilling is executives' number-one workforce initiative to "deliver measurable ROI" in 2022 – it's the fourth priority among people leaders, followed by designing talent/hiring processes around skills.

Some 62% of executives say they are facing a labour shortage crisis, with 59% concerned about hiring the right talent at the right price – and at the right pace – the survey of almost 800 Australian executives, HR leaders and employees shows.

Only 26% of people leaders believe gig workers can close the skill gap, but two-thirds of executives say they will "substantially replace full-time employees in their company in one-to-three years"...
