"Up-credentialling" rife in job ads; Top skills for 2023

Australian employers have unnecessarily high expectations that their candidates will possess formal qualifications, according to a globally renowned research director. Meanwhile a new report highlights the areas where employees have done the most upskilling this year.

In 2021, about 97% of Australian job postings requested higher education, compared to about 90% in the UK and roughly 85% in the US, says Layla O'Kane, research director at Lightcast (formerly Burning Glass), who recently presented a session on 'big labour market data', hosted by Transearch.

Her analysis indicates Australian employers' expectations have "consistently been higher" than the UK and US during the comparison period of 2016 to 2021...
