Where recruitment leaders go wrong with hiring rookies

As it gets harder to find and train recruiters, agency leaders could benefit from adopting some of the strategies they preach to clients; they're also making some simple errors when it comes to remuneration and development, an industry training specialist says.

According to IBISworld research, the number of recruitment agencies grew 19% between 2018 to October 2021, but there are 9% fewer people working in the sector, says Career Lasso director Adele Last.

And average job tenure across all industries in Australia is three years and four months, but in the recruitment sector, it's 12–18 months "at most", she told a recent Captain's Table forum hosted by Navigator Consulting.

"It's a problem. It's hard to find experienced recruiters, it's hard to create new ones, and it's hard to retain new ones...
